QUINCY – August 15th saw the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds’s Board of Directors reconvene at the Tulsa Scott Pavilion to evaluate the successes of both the High Sierra Music Festival and the annual Plumas-Sierra County Fair. High Sierra Music Festival saw noticeably above-average attendance this year – approximately 8,500 people compared to the usual 6,000. This success in attendance was replicated at the County Fair, which saw an aggregate four-day attendance number of a whopping 20,200. Complaints about the heat were surprisingly limited despite the triple-digit highs during the fair, which saw an increase in every financial and display category except exhibits. Final gross sales by vendors at the fair exceeded $100,000, and only one vendor at the entire Fair was a no-show. The Jake Jacobson concert was a definite success, with attendance at an estimated 550-700 people – significantly above expectations. Steffanic is already working to draft plans for next year’s grandstand concert. Of those in attendance, roughly 460 paid for tickets, the proceeds of which are to be donated to the Dixie Fire Collaborative. Meanwhile, the Fair was not without issues. Higher than usual attendance meant higher than usual crime, which ranged from the theft of about a dozen airbrushed hats early one morning to a drunken dispute that allegedly ended in a stabbing Saturday night. Various private security measures were proposed at the meeting, the most favorable of which seemed to be a proposed contract for security and hospitality with the local E Clampus Vitus chapter. The 2023 Plumas-Sierra County Fair will be held next July 27th – 30th. Unfortunately, the original “second week in August” dates have been claimed on the carnival schedule by Oregon’s Jackson County Fair.
