The Downieville gas station, open and pumping fuel again after a prolonged closure.
DOWNIEVILLE — Following a prolonged closure of nearly a decade, fuel is now available again at the Downieville gas station. Residents and visitors have been eagerly awaiting the reopening, especially since the old underground storage tanks were removed in July of last year.
The gas station shut down after an incorrect fuel type was delivered and pumped into one of its tanks. The incident required the removal and replacement of the affected tank. Adding to the situation, California regulations mandate that single-walled underground storage tanks be replaced with double-walled versions by the end of 2025.
Balch Petroleum handled the removal of the old tanks and installed two new 15,000-gallon double-walled tanks. The project began in late July 2024, with the new tanks in place by October. Fuel dispensers were then added, and the first fuel delivery was made in January of this year.
Gas is purchasable by credit card only.
Although the gas station was nearly operational in January, its opening was delayed by the need to clear contaminated soil excavated during the tank replacement. After contractors were hired, the soil removal started in early April.
The gas pumps now operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, accepting only credit card payments. Current fuel prices are $4.99 for regular, $5.19 for plus, and $5.39 for premium gasoline. Diesel #2 is offered for $5.19.
