Local Football – 10/2

October 2, 2025

Here are the results from how the teams in our region fared last week, and a peek at what is coming up for them next week:

Bear River Bruins: Playing away from home wasn’t an obstacle last Friday night; the Bruins secured a 22-15 victory over the Oakmont Vikings of Roseville. This week, the Bruins will be traveling to face the Lincoln Fighting Zebras, a team with a strong record (four wins and only one loss) and a higher MaxPreps ranking than the Bruins. Outscoring the Fighting Zebras will be a stiff challenge for Bear River.

Chester Volcanos: After their long (3-hour) journey to Trinity County, the Volcanos were unable to score while their opponent, the unbeaten Hayfork Lumberjacks, racked up 56 points. This week, on Saturday, the Volcanos “only” have a two-hour journey to face the Loyalton Grizzlies. This Division I (8-man) conference game promises to be one between more well-matched opponents.

Colfax Falcons: Last Friday night, the Falcons lost a close game to the Marysville Indians, 25-29, for their fourth consecutive defeat. Tomorrow night, the Falcons will be traveling to take the field against the Wheatland Pirates. According to MaxPreps.com, the Pirates are ranked as California’s 533rd best team, while the Falcons are ranked 656th. Thus, a victory for the Falcons will be a stunning upset.

Herlong Vikings: Having home-field advantage did not help the Vikings secure their first victory of the season; they lost 18-40 to the Butte Valley Bulldogs. At home again this Saturday afternoon, the Vikings will be facing the Westwood Lumberjacks, a team with only one win this season.

Lassen Grizzlies: Last Friday, Susanville’s Grizzlies took a two-hour trip to Palo Cedro (near Redding) and lost, 7-40, to the Foothill Cougars. At home tomorrow night, the Grizzlies host the Las Plumas Thunderbirds. Since the Thunderbirds are unbeaten so far this season, it would be an upset if the Grizzlies were to win this week.

Loyalton Grizzlies: After a bye week to rest and regroup from being overwhelmed by the Sierra Lutheran Falcons, the Grizzlies will host the Chester Volcanos this Saturday afternoon. Last year, Loyalton outscored the Volcanos, 20-6, and the Grizzlies are looking forward to repeating the feat this year.

Modoc Braves: Last week, the Braves triumphed, 40-28, in their game at home against the Fall River Bulldogs. Tomorrow, however, the Braves travel to play the Redding Christian Lions, a team with an unbeaten record this season. To beat the Lions, the Braves will need to play their best game of the year.

Nevada Union Miners: In last week’s contest against the Antioch Panthers, the Miners were leading 10-6 at the end of the first half. Unfortunately, the Panthers outscored the Miners, 13-8, in the second half, and the Miners were defeated 18-19. Tomorrow, the Miners will take the field against an even stronger team, the unbeaten Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos.

Placer Hillmen: Following a bye week, the Hillmen will host the Del Campo Cougars, a relatively weak team, and the Hillmen should have a four-win, two-loss record when the contest ends tomorrow night.

Plumas Charter Warriors: The Warriors hosted the Burney Raiders last week and came close to upsetting the tough Butte Valley Bulldogs. Alas, the Warriors came up short, losing 20-26. Tomorrow evening, the Warriors will face the visiting Tule Lake Honkers, a team with a 2-3 record. Thus, the odds for the Warriors winning this contest are good.

Portola Tigers: Last week, the potent offense and surprisingly stingy defense of the Los Molinos Bulldogs handed the Tigers a 7-42 loss. This week, the Tigers will be at home facing another challenging opponent, the unbeaten Hamilton Braves, who defeated the Quincy Trojans, 55-0, last Friday.

Quincy Trojans: Having been beaten soundly at home, 0-55, last week by the Hamilton Braves, this week the Trojans are traveling to play the Biggs Wolverines. Since MaxPreps.com currently ranks the Wolverines higher (846th best) than the Trojans (923rd best), Quincy will undoubtedly face an uphill battle in their effort to achieve a 3-2 record for the season.

Truckee Wolverines: Last Saturday, the Wolverines hosted the formidable rushing attack of the Fernley Vaqueros. Although ahead 21-13 at halftime, after giving up 18 points while going scoreless in the third quarter, the Wolverines lost the game, 29-38. Tomorrow night, again at home, the Wolverines face the unbeaten (5-0) Elko Indians, a team that beat Fernley, 26-15, early in the season. Therefore, it will be an upset if the Wolverines overcome the Indians.

Westwood Lumberjacks: After a tough 26-30 loss at home to the Happy Camp Indians last Friday, the Lumberjacks will travel to play the winless (0-5) Herlong Vikings on Saturday, 10/4, with a good chance to win and bring their season record to two wins and three losses.
