Here are the results from how the teams in our region fared last week, and looks at what they are facing this week:
Bear River Bruins: Traveling to face the formidable Lincoln Fighting Zebras last Friday night, the Bruins took a heartbreaking, 27-28, loss. This week, the Bruin will be at home for a game against the Marysville Indians. While MaxPreps.com ranks the Bruins higher than the Indians, the visitors have far better offensive statistics than the Bruins. So, to be victorious, Bear River’s defense needs to play exceptionally well.
Chester Volcanos: Last Saturday, the Volcanos traveled a couple of hours for a game against the Loyalton Grizzlies. The combination of Loyalton’s strong defense, a knee injury to a key player, and questionable officiating near the end of the game led to a 6-14 defeat for the Volcanos. Tomorrow, the Volcanos will be making a shorter trip while traveling to Greenville to the Plumas Charter Warriors. Both teams have three wins and three losses, and this 8-man competition promises to be very competitive.
Colfax Falcons: The Falcons played on the road against the Wheatland Pirates last Friday and suffered their fifth straight loss, being outscored 33-51. Tomorrow, Colfax hosts the Center Cougars of Antelope. Last week, the Cougars lost to the Oakmont Vikings by a single point. On September 19, the Falcons were defeated by the Vikings by a 13-point margin. Thus, the Falcons will be facing an uphill battle to break their losing streak.
Herlong Vikings: On their home field last Saturday afternoon, the Vikings broke their five-game losing streak by defeating the Westwood Lumberjacks, 44-20. After a bye this week, on October 17, the Vikings will go to Bieber for a contest against the Big Valley Cardinals. Since Big Valley lost its game to Westwood 22-30 on September 19, the Vikings have a good chance to close their season with another win.
Lassen Grizzlies: At home last Friday evening, the Grizzlies took on the Las Plumas Thunderbirds and walloped the previously unbeaten team, 56-14. Tomorrow, the Grizzlies will host the Anderson Cubs for Lassen’s first conference game of the season. Since the Cubs lost to the Thunderbirds, 14-21, in early September, if the Grizzlies play like they did last Friday, they will win again this week.
Loyalton Grizzlies: Last Saturday afternoon, the Chester Volcanos visited Loyalton and, in a game dominated by in-your-face defenses and goal-line stands, the “Big Grizz” managed to outscore the Volcanos, 14-6. Tomorrow, the Grizzlies make a long (250+ mile) trip to Trinity County for a game against the unbeaten (6-0) Hayfork Lumberjacks, a team that outscored the Chester Volcanos, 56-0, on 9/26. Clearly, the Grizzlies will have to play extraordinarily well to end Hayfork’s winning streak.
Modoc Braves: Last week, the Braves traveled to play the unbeaten Redding Christian Lions, and this unbeaten team trounced the Braves, 60-6. In their next game, a week from tomorrow, the Braves will host the Weed Cougars, a team without a victory in its first five contests of the 2025 season.
Nevada Union Miners: On Friday night, October 3, the Miners hosted the unbeaten Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos (from Lincoln) and were defeated, 17-56. Next up, tomorrow night, the Miners travel to play the Roseville Tigers, another strong (5-1) opponent.
Placer Hillmen: As we expected, last Friday at home, the Hillmen outscored the Del Campo Cougars 42-26 and now own a four-win, two-loss record for the season. Tomorrow night, the Hillmen, again at home, will go up against the high-scoring, unbeaten Twelve Bridges Raging Rhinos.
Plumas Charter Warriors: Last week, the visiting Tule Lake Honkers proved to be a significantly better team than their 2-3 record suggested, and the Warriors fell to defeat, 6-36. Tomorrow evening, Plumas Charter will face the banged-up Chester Volcanos in what should be a tight contest.
Portola Tigers: For the second week in a row, last Friday night, the Tigers hosted a team with a flashy offense and a stingy defense. Thus, last Friday night, the Tigers suffered a 0-55 defeat at the hands of the unbeaten Hamilton Braves. This week’s contest, at home against the Williams Yellowjackets, looks to be a much more competitive contest.
Quincy Trojans: As expected, the lower-ranked Trojans were unable to match the more powerful offense and defense of the Biggs Wolverines last Friday night, and the Trojans lost 6-36. Tomorrow night, since the visiting Maxwell Panthers are also ranked significantly higher than the Trojans by MaxPreps.com, the Trojans will again face an uphill battle in their effort to secure a victory.
Truckee Wolverines: Last Friday, the Wolverines hosted the unbeaten (5-0) Elko Indians and pulled off an upset, outscoring the visitors 20-14. Tomorrow, Truckee will take a long trip (nearly 3 hours) to Winnemucca, NV, for a game against the Lowry Buckeroos.
Westwood Lumberjacks: The Lumberjacks were surprised last Saturday when the Herlong Vikings outscored them, 44-20. This week, the Lumberjacks are enjoying a week off from competition, hoping this rest will improve their chances of beating the Butte Valley Bulldogs on Friday, October 17.
