Here are the results of what the teams we’re following within our region did last week, and a look at what is coming up for them next week.
Bear River Bruins: Trailing, 6-12, at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Bruins rallied to defeat the visiting Golden Sierra Grizzlies by a score of 19-12 last Friday night. Juniors Jayden Brock and Corbin Mertens, accounting for 158 yards of the 171 yards gained by the Bruins, played a starring role in this victory. Tomorrow, the Bruins will carry a 3-1 record into their first league game while hosting the Wheatland Pirates, another team with three wins and one loss, who are riding high after a 53-16 victory over the Woodland Wolves.
Chester Volcanos: For the second week in a row, a strong defense guided the Volcanos to a shutout victory. Having a potent offense, as well, meant the team outscored the Big Valley Cardinals by a score of 24-0 and now has an unbeaten, 3-0, record. Tomorrow, in the first of four consecutive weeks playing away from their home field, the Volcanos travel to play the Burney Raiders, a team that beat the winless Butte Valley Bulldogs, 44-0, last week.
Colfax Falcons: After a bruising, 42-55, home field loss to the Argonaut Mustangs of Jackson last Friday, the Falcons have a bye this week and plenty of time to prepare for a battle with the visiting Oakmont Vikings. Although the Vikings have only one win in their three games, they outscored their last opponent, the River Valley Falcons, 40-12. Thus, the Colfax Falcons won’t want to underestimate this foe.
Herlong Vikings: The woes of these Vikings continued last Saturday when the visiting Loyalton Grizzlies outscored them 38-12. Tomorrow, 9/19, the 17 players on the Vikings roster will travel to oppose 18 Happy Camp Indians, attempting to avenge their 8-32 loss to Happy Camp on 8/30.
Lassen Grizzlies: Last week, led by Dowan Stephens, Terrin Hanson, Krush Costello, and Ethan Gates, running backs who gained 302 yards out of the 369 produced against the Enterprise Hornets, these Grizzlies posted a 57-23 victory. Next, after a week off, on 9/26, the team will travel for a couple of hours to Palo Cedro to oppose (as we go to press) the winless Foothill Cougars.
Loyalton Grizzlies: After a 38-12 road victory over the Herlong Vikings last Saturday, the Loyalton Grizzlies will travel to Carson City, NV, this Saturday for a contest against the Sierra Lutheran Falcons. Since their opponent has yet to lose a game this season, Loyalton’s Grizzlies are bound to face a formidable foe in a couple of days.
Modoc Braves: At home, with both a strong defense and their quarterback, Junior Tyler Guasp, advancing the team by 201.5 yards through the air, while Senior running back Sutton Cockrell rushed for 73 yards, the Braves shut out the Lakeview Honkers last week, 26-0. Tomorrow, the team will travel to play the winless Portola Tigers, hoping to level their season’s record at two wins and two losses.
Nevada Union Miners: The Miners lost, at home, to the Casa Roble Rams, 20-52, last week despite senior rushing back Rhyder Eelkemas gaining 143 yards (his third straight game of rushing for at least 131 yards) while senior Brandon McCallum rushed for 131 yards. As it happened, the Miners’ defense was unable to overcome the 360 yards gained by the opposition’s passing and running attack. After a bye week, the Miners will travel on 9/26 to play the Antioch Panthers.
Placer Hillmen: Last week, in an away game, the Hillmen thrashed the Antelope Titans, 31-0, as senior running backs Danny Sanchez-Harlow and Shaun Jones rushed for 175 yards, and the team’s defense played a stellar game. Next up, tomorrow evening, the Hillmen will host the Burbank Titans of Sacramento - a team beaten 6-42 last week.
Portola Tigers: After a bye week, the Tigers are hosting the Modoc Braves tomorrow evening and have a good chance of posting their first victory of the season. Yes, according to MaxPreps.com, the Tigers are ranked 853rd in California, while the Braves are ranked 951st.
Plumas Charter Warriors: The Warriors started their season with a dismal 0-21 loss to the Sierra Lutheran Falcons. However, they rebounded with a 62-20 romp over the Herlong Vikings on 9/5 and a stirring 44-6 triumph over the Westwood Lumberjacks last Friday. Now, after a bye week, they are looking forward to building a 3-1 record by beating tough opposition, the Burney Raiders, at home, on 9/26.
Quincy Trojans: The Trojans faced a buzzsaw when they were shut out, 0-42, by the visiting Pershing County Mustangs of Lovelock, NV, last Friday night. Next, after a bye this week, on 9/26, the Trojans, with a two-win and one-loss record, will begin league play against the tough Hamilton Braves, a team outscoring their first three opponents 142-16. Will Quincy’s next opponent remain unbeaten after the Pershing County Mustangs play Hamilton tomorrow night?
Truckee Wolverines: Last Friday, the Wolverines bounced back from the previous week’s shutout against Churchill County with a solid 22-15 victory over the Spring Creek Spartans. Next Friday, the Wolverines travel to play the winless (0-3) Dayton (NV) Dust Devils.
Westwood Lumberjacks: In the wake of a dispiriting, 6-44 loss to the Plumas Charter Warriors last Friday, tomorrow the Lumberjacks will be hosting the Big Valley (Bieber) Cardinals. Since the Cardinals were shut out by the Chester Volcanoes 0-24 last week, the same team the Lumberjacks came within three points of beating, back on 8/28, Westwood stands a very good chance of posting their first victory of the year on 9/19.
