The fifth annual Poetry Out Loud County Finals will be held on Friday, February 3, at 3:45 p.m., in the drama room of Downieville High School. The public is invited and welcome! Poetry Out Loud is an initiative of the National Endowment of the Arts, sponsored in California by the California Arts Council, and in Sierra County by the Sierra County Arts Council, under the executive directorship of B.J. Jordan. Even though this is only the fifth year that Sierra County has participated in the program, it has been in existence nation- and state-wide since 2005. Poetry Out Loud is a program of poetry memorization and recitation for high school students. Participants in the County Finals will each recite two poems, selected from an online anthology of more than 1,100 poems on the national Poetry Out Loud website (poetryoutloud.org). They will be judged on physical presence, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of understanding, overall performance, and accuracy. The county champion, who will go on to represent Sierra County at the State Finals, will receive an award of $250. The runner-up will receive $150, and the third-place finisher will receive $100. All three of these students will have their names added to the Poetry Out Loud plaque that hangs in the lobby of the Yuba Theatre in Downieville. Paul Guffin, Sierra County Poetry Out Loud Coordinator, adds this reminder to the invitation to come, watch, and listen to the students: to enable the participants to perform their recitations without distractions, no recording or photography are permitted during the competition.
